A brief discription of positions in a large Veterinary Hospital include-

RECEPTIONIST               Responsibilities include answering the telephone, setting up new clients-patients and entering their data on the vet specific computer programs, scheduling appointments, and preparation and maintenance of electronic and written medical records. They also are involved in over the counter sales, mail outs & annual reminders, computer operation and data entry, financial transactions. Clearly explaining procedures and consent forms to clients, filing and finalizing dental & medical charts, anaesthetic and surgery forms brought forward from hospital and general front office and reception area maintenance.                                                                   Receptionists will assume the responsibility for acquiring the medical and legal information necessary for the medical care of the patients. This position may overlap with veterinary nursing duties as often a thorough understanding of medical procedures is required to properly assist the client over the phone, and assess the pet for appropriate treatment.

ANIMAL ATTENDANT (KENNEL ATTENDANT)           Kennel Attendants are responsible for the daily cleaning and general animal care of animal kennels and kenneling areas/runs. They monitor the health and vaccination status of animals entering the facility, to protect our client’s pets. They are in a unique position to draw the vet nurse and vet’s attention to any changes in eating and drinking habits, breathing and toiletry behaviour.                                                                                                                                                                                    They may be involved in following prescriptions and daily treatment plans for pets in boarding, as well as bathing and integrating with other areas of the hospital such as grooming or surgery. They may report to a Senior Veterinary Nurse, or occasionally directly liaise with the veterinarian. They abide by strict guidelines of kennel awareness, walk dogs, clean and sanitize all food bowls, water bowls, litter trays, and laundry on a daily basis.                                                                                                                                                        Pets not meeting the stringent standards of our holding facilities will be diverted to isolation areas for their own protection as well as others. These quarantined areas are maintained by animal attendants and good understanding of cross contamination and prevention is important.

Of course they provide all boarding animals with loving attention and cuddles in turn, some of whom smooch and talk back!
