Heartworm Prevention

Heartworm lives in the blood stream and heart of your dog and cat, and is transmitted by mosquitoes. Heartworm is a potentially fatal disease and therefore preventative treatments are essential.

See our facebook for examples of cases on the Central Coast-

Remember research has showed many positive dogs were actually being treated with monthly heartworm by owners, so consider the once a year injection as a way to decrease this risk.

Puppies should be constantly protected against heartworm from 12 wks of age, for their entire life. Most owners opt for a baby heartworm injection starting at 12 weeks of age.

If heartworm prevention is only started after 6 months of age you require a veterinary blood test before preventative care begins.

Most owners opt for a single once a year heartworm injection given at the same time as their annual vaccination.
